The official definition of broadband
Broadband is not a technology, but an umbrella name for technologies that enable very
fast information transfer between two fixed points. The Swedish government has defined
broadband in the report “Broadband for nation-wide growth”. This has become the most
recognized definition. There broadband is “Real transfer capacity of at least 2 Mbps
in a wire (cable) or carrier wave (wireless) in both directions.” 2 Mbps means that
250,000 symbols can be transferred per second. A regular modem is capable of
handling 7,000 symbols per second. “In both directions” means that the capacity applies
for the transfer both to and from the user.
